Call for Papers + Creative Showcases and Interactive Art

ACE has become the leading scientific forum for dissemination of cutting-edge research results in the area of entertainment computing. Interactive entertainment is one of the most vibrant areas of interest in modern society and is amongst the fastest growing industries in the world. ACE 2013 will bring together leading researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to present their innovative work and discuss all aspects and challenges of interactive entertainment technology, in an exciting, cultural, and stimulating environment.

ACE is by nature a multi-disciplinary conference, therefore attracting people across a wide spectrum of interests and disciplines including computer science, design, arts, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and marketing. The main goal of ACE is to stimulate discussion in the development of new and compelling entertainment computing and interactive art concepts and applications. All ACE participants are encouraged to present work they believe will shape the future, going beyond the established paradigms, and focusing on all areas related to interactive entertainment.


We invite paper submissions in various tracks: regular papers for the main track, special sessions, poster papers, interactive art and creative showcases. Accepted submissions in these tracks will appear in a proceedings published with a major publisher. In addition, we invite proposals for workshops and kids’ workshops, and submissions to the ACE 2013 Game Competition.


The theme of ACE 2013 is “Making New Knowledge”. We especially welcome novel showcases and interactive art that relate to this year’s conference theme, inspired by John Seely Brown�’s lecture on “tinkering as a mode of knowledge construction”, by the fact that making games and toys is often even more fun than playing with them, and by the very hands-on creative approach with which ACE participants have always explored the boundaries of creative technology.


In addition to this year’s theme,  we solicit submissions on a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to:

Creative Showcases and Interactive Art

The Creative Showcases and Interactive Art track is open to a large variety of submissions including, but not limited to:

  • Technical demonstrations of prototype technologies of advanced entertainment technology
  • All varieties of video and computer games
  • Interactive art, new media art, and technology-based art
  • Web and mobile-based computer entertainment
  • Audio, visual and other sensory forms of digital interaction

Accepted works will be demonstrated to conference attendees during the Creative Showcases and Interactive Art session.


Submission deadline: Sunday, June 23, 23:59 GMT

An extended abstract will appear in the ACE 2013 Proceedings, which will be published through a high quality scientific publisher.

Submissions must be in English. A submission to this track consists of:

  • A short document in PDF format about the technical requirements (e.g. space, sound, light, and so on) of the demo
  • A 4-page PDF document containing an extended abstract which should describe the showcase and its underlying ideas and motivation in sufficient detail necessary for a thorough evaluation of your contribution.

Previously published, demonstrated or under submission work can be submitted, but information on prior exposure of the work must be provided in the submitted paper. Novelty is an important selection criteria for ACE Creative Showcases and Interactive Art.

Authors may include supplementary materials (such as a video or photos) with the submission, and such materials are highly encouraged if they provide evidence of the claimed contribution. Videos should not be longer than 5 minutes long, and the total size of all submitted materials (including the PDF document) must be under 20MB. Videos should be playable by either the current Windows Media Player or Apple Quicktime player. It is preferable that your video is playable by these standard players without requiring additional codec installations. If you require a special codec (e.g. DivX), make certain that you include instructions on how to find and install that codec.


By default, one table, two chairs, one poster board with enough space left for one A0-sized poster in portrait orientation, 220-240V 50Hz power, and internet connectivity will be available. If you have some special requirements, please feel free to contact the Creative Showcases and Interactive Art chairs.

Participants are expected to bring the necessary equipment to the conference site with them. Demonstrations will be presented during the conference.
