The Department

The department is renowned nationally and internationally for its interdisciplinary research from a strong base in computer science. In RAE 2008, all our full time staff were submitted and 20% of our research was categorised as world-leading, placing us among the top Computer Science research universities in the UK.

The RAE panel stated that “The inter-disciplinarity of the submission is strongly commended and contributes substantially to the diversity of UK research in this area.” Our research environment was described as “substantially of internationally excellent quality”, and the report noted the “strategic focus on the Creative industries that contributed in very large part to a vital, sustainable and credible submission.”

1. Researcher (Knowledge Representation and Reasoning)

Fixed-Term until 31 January 2012

The Role:

The Department of Computing has a vacancy for a Researcher to join the EU-funded TA2 project that aims to develop technologies for natural multi-location and multi-camera video-based communication. They require an intelligent component – the orchestrator – responsible for the virtual direction of cameras and screens, in order to ensure the best communication channels between the people involved. You will be contributing to the development of this component, working on the elicitation of orchestration intelligence and its subsequent expression in a declarative computational form.

You should have or be near the completion of a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (such as computer science) and/or equivalent work experience. You should have experience in knowledge representations and automatic reasoning and solid OO language programming experience. You will be expected to have initiative, lead research, be self-motivated and be able to work as part of a team. Previous research experience and experience of declarative programming are very desirable.

2. Researcher (Video Mediated Interaction)

1 year fixed-term

The Role:

The Department of Computing has an immediate vacancy for a Researcher to join the EU-funded TA2 project that aims to develop video-based communication technology that will allow family and friends situated in different locations to foster a better feeling of belonging; in essence, technologies for natural multi-location and multi-camera video-based communication. They require an intelligent component – the orchestrator – responsible for the virtual direction of cameras and screens, in order to ensure the best communication channels between the people involved in the communication. You will be expected to have significant contributions to the design of the experiments for the refinement of orchestration logic and in the subsequent analysis of the data with a particular view to recognising and formulating communication traits and cues that could drive the orchestration logic.

You should have a degree, preferably postgraduate, in a speciality that provided you with a substantial background in communication and/or interaction, preferably mediated, such as Psychology, Interaction Design, Social Science, Languages, Human Computer Interaction, or equivalent work experience. You should have experience in experiment design, communication or interaction analysis, and experience evaluation. You will be expected to have initiative, lead research, be self-motivated and be able to work in a team.

3. Software Developer / Researcher (Development of Authoring Tools)

Fixed-Term until 31 January 2012

The Role:

The Department of Computing has an immediate vacancy for a Software Developer / Researcher to join the EU-funded TA2 project. One of the project’s aims is the development of software support for interactive video narrative, regarded as automatic creation of video compilations that satisfy requirements expressed by their viewers (imagine a documentary that can respond in real time to input from the viewer). Such compilations are automatically generated on the basis of “instructions” pre-authored and represented as narrative structures in a dedicated representation language. You will be contributing to the development of an authoring toolkit for such interactive narrative structures.

You should have a degree, preferably postgraduate, in a relevant discipline (such as computer science) and/or equivalent work experience. You should have good experience and skills in programming in an OO language (e.g. Java or C++), in a graphical library associated with an OO language (e.g. Swing or Qt) and in GUI implementation and design. Experience of digital media representations and handling is desirable. You will be expected to have initiative, be self-motivated and be able to work as part of a team.

4. Software Developer / Researcher (Development of Simulation and Authoring Tools)

Fixed-term until 31 January 2012

The Role:

The Department of Computing has an immediate vacancy for a Software Developer / Researcher to join the EU-funded TA2 project that aims to develop technologies for natural multi-location and multi-camera video-based communication. They require an intelligent component – the orchestrator – responsible for the virtual direction of cameras and screens in order to ensure the best communication channels between the people involved in the communication. You will be contributing to the development of software tools required for the experimental-based elicitation of orchestration logic, for carrying out semi-automatic orchestration, and for authoring interaction scripts used in automatic orchestration.
