Presence videos: How generative AI is blurring the line between “real” and “fake”

[Rather than a news story, today we have something a little different for an ISPR Presence News post: Two videos, both intended to illustrate the potential for generative artificial intelligence to evoke presence by mimicking recordings of actual people, objects and events.

The first video (“The PSAi”) is part of a well-funded media literacy campaign from the Columbia Journalism Review, a music video about how members of the public can distinguish “real” and “fake” media. The second video (“This Film is Lying”) has been posted recently by many different entities on social media platforms and was apparently created by an individual; the goal is to “challenge what we believe is real” by illustrating how quickly AI is blurring the “line between fiction and reality.”

I’d argue that “The PSAi” is well-intentioned but the guidance it offers will soon be moot as AI evolves and, as “This Film is Lying” notes, we won’t be able to reliably distinguish “real” from “fake.”

If you’ve made or know about other videos that may be of interest to the presence community – on this topic, or any presence-related topic – please e-mail me at lombard@temple.edu with the information so I can share them in future posts.

“That image you shared? Might not be real. Let the PSAi show you what is, using the viral fakes everyone fell for. Find out more at thepsai.com.”

From the About page of thepsai.com:

“For more than a century, photography has been one of the greatest tools journalists have had to establish truth and trust. But AI-generated images are making it increasingly hard to distinguish real from fake media. The PSAi is a campaign that uses viral ai images to teach people how to spot AI visuals.”

From a Facebook post by All About Ai:

“This film is lying — and that’s exactly the point.

Made entirely with AI, this video challenges what we believe is real.

As the creator @kngmkrlabs explains, the goal is simple: make people realize nothing is real anymore.

From synthetic visuals to AI-generated narratives, we’ve entered an era where the line between fiction and reality is disappearing fast.”
