In March of 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous countries across the globe declared nationwide shutdowns that resulted in profound changes in the daily life of millions of individuals. While many workers in the hospitality and travel industries were suddenly left unemployed, countless others found themselves working—and playing—through video chat software platforms. And of those platforms, Zoom quickly emerged as the default modality for remote engagement, rapidly morphing from brand name to eponymous generic—a verb and a place and mode of being all at once. In an era of COVID-19, our relationships and experiences are deeply intertwined with our ability to “zoom.”

Virtual reality archery is “Braille” for orientation of blind people

[Beyond the scientific findings from a new study that used virtual reality to explore how blind people orient themselves in space, this short story from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) suggests important benefits of using the experimental stimulus (and variations of it) to provide new presence experiences to this segment of the population for both rehabilitation and entertainment. Over the last 20 years the research on Social Robots, namely machines specifically conceived and designed to produce a social interaction with users, gained growing interest both in the academic field and in public opinion. Within this group of robots, often anthropomorphic both in appearance and behaviour, we can further distinguish Companion robots, in which the establishment of a relational bond with the user is the very goal of the robot. Together with a widespread enthusiasm toward these machines and their applications, especially in the assistive and care-taking activities, multiple concerns were raised by scholars. For Sydneysider Will Trott, attending his little sister’s wedding at a working sheep and cattle station south of Adelaide transformed into a “highly emotive” out-of-body experience.

A telepresence robot, rented and couriered from Melbourne, attended in his place, providing a portal to wholeheartedly interact with family and friends — including cutting moves on the dance floor.
