CONTEXT

The successful candidate will join the “Environmental Research and Innovation” (ERIN) department. With a team of more than 170 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and IT science, the department has the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle major environmental challenges our society is facing today: climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.

DESCRIPTION

PROJECTS AND MAIN MISSIONS

The candidate will work within the European Horizon 2020 project TARGET which focusses on mixed and augmented reality applications for use by security critical agents.

The project TARGET (http://www.target-h2020.eu/) focusses on building mixed reality serious game training environments for use by security critical agents. These include police, fire brigades and other relevant European agencies. The objective is to use mixed reality technologies, including augmented reality to create effective training environments. The project is funded by the European Commission under the highly competitive Horizon 2020 programme and involves partners from across Europe.

The job requires skills in both software development and human-computer interaction. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with leading international experts and the role may involve travel within the European Union.

We are looking for a motivated and innovative researcher, who has passion for creating advanced training environments and evaluating their effectiveness. The candidate will be based in the e-Science research unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation Department (ERIN). The position is an ideal opportunity to work with leading edge technologies for use within challenging real world problems.

In this framework, the selected candidate will:

  • Undertake extensive work with end user partners, in particular with respect to technical and usability testing
  • Develop 3D and 2D interactive computer environments
  • Work with statistical software tools and data collection approaches, including using R
  • Work with distributed computing and multiuser platforms
  • Develop sensor technologies and algorithms
  • Undertake software quality control and testing procedures
  • Work with international project partners, including attending meetings
  • Plan software development schedules
  • Contribute to report writing and publications in English

PROFILE

EDUCATION

  • PhD in computer science or a PhD in human-computer interaction related areas with significant software development competences

COMPETENCIES

  • You are open minded and think interdisciplinary
  • You are creative, a team player and have proven organizational skills
  • It is desirable to have worked in a team which has undertaken research or developed a new product although this is not a requirement
  • Interface design and prototyping and human-computer interaction skills are required
  • User testing based around subjective and objective measurements is required
  • Experience of statistical analysis tools such as R would be an asset
  • Object oriented programming, functional programming and component based programming (C#, Java, Java EE, Python, and Javascript for example) is required
  • Knowledge of version Control systems (git, svn)
  • Experience of 3D gaming platforms such as Unity or similar tools would be an advantage but is not a requirement
  • Experience of working with commonly found sensors on mobile devices e.g. positioning, bluetooth and NFC
  • Experience of working with augmented reality applications is desirable although not mandatory
  • Experience of developing HTML 5 and Android applications would be a strong asset
  • Experience of computer vision approaches would be an asset but is not required

LANGUAGE

  • Proficient spoken and written knowledge of English is mandatory. Proficiency of at least one of the official languages of the country is an asset (French, German or Luxembourgish)
