Call: Online survey on perception of avatar personality

Hi all…

We are performing some research on the perception of avatar personality based on facial features.

To assist in this research, we are hosting a brief Web based survey to collect data about such perceptions.

If interested, we would like invite you to take this survey which can be found at:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/avatarperception

The survey is anonymous and takes around 20 minutes to complete.

Thanks in advance for your participation.  Please feel free to forward this message to colleagues who may also be interested in participating.

‘Auti-Sim’ Game Simulates Life With Childhood Autism

Camille Bautista  – March 7, 2013

In a playground filled with gleeful shouts, you approach a group of children. Suddenly, your vision turns blurry and pixelated. The echoing screams become raucous.

It’s the experience of sensory overload, according to a new game called Auti-Sim. The simulation, created by a three-member team at the Vancouver Hacking Health hackathon, aims to raise awareness of the challenges of hypersensitivity disorder and help people understand how it can lead to isolation.

The closer you get to loud and active children, the more overwhelming the situation becomes. As you move toward quieter areas, the strain tapers off. Watch the demo here.… read more. “‘Auti-Sim’ game simulates life with childhood autism”

Development of virtual storytelling, audience immersion in news content controversial

Smith: Development of virtual storytelling, audience immersion in news content controversial

Published March 7, 2013
By Kat Smith

Part of a journalist’s role in society is to bring the audience into the story. Immersive journalism uses gaming platforms and virtual reality to take this idea to the next level and puts users inside a re-construction of events.

Nonny de la Peña, manager of the University of Southern California MxR lab, presented this technology in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium on March 4. Many of the audience members reported that the experience felt real and responded emotionally.

In a 3-D environment based on actual new stories and through a virtual reality headset provided in the lab, the user can experience the story as if he or she was a first-person witness.… read more. “Development of virtual storytelling, audience immersion in news content controversial”

Call: Sensory Substitution and Augmentation Conference and Demonstration (London)

Sensory Substitution and Augmentation Conference and Demonstration

Tuesday 26 – Thursday 28 March 2013
Venue: The British Academy,
10-11 Carlton House Terrace,
London SW1Y 5AH

Since 1968 scientists have been creating sensory substitution and augmentation devices. With these devices they try to replace or enhance one sense by using another sense. For example, in tactile–vision, stimulation of the skin driven by input to a camera is used to replace the ordinary sense of vision that uses our eyes. The feelSpace belt aims to give people a magnetic sense of direction using vibrotactile stimulation driven by a digital compass. This conference will bring together people developing these technologies, the psychologists studying the minds and behaviour of subjects who use the devices, and the neuroscientists and philosophers interested in the nature of perceptual experience and sensory interaction. We will explore the nature, limits and possibilities of these technologies, how they can be used to help those with sensory impairments, and what they can tell us about perception and perceptual experience in general.… read more. “Call: Sensory Substitution and Augmentation Conference and Demonstration (London)”

Brain-to-brain interface allows transmission of tactile, motor information between rats

[From Duke Health; a 12:41 minute video is available on YouTube; the article is available from Scientific Reports]

Rat brains linked

Brain-to-brain interface allows transmission of tactile and motor information between rats

By Duke Medicine News and Communications
Published: Feb. 28, 2013

DURHAM, N.C. — Researchers have electronically linked the brains of pairs of rats for the first time, enabling them to communicate directly to solve simple behavioral puzzles. A further test of this work successfully linked the brains of two animals thousands of miles apart—one in Durham, N.C., and one in Natal, Brazil.

The results of these projects suggest the future potential for linking multiple brains to form what the research team is calling an “organic computer,” which could allow sharing of motor and sensory information among groups of animals. The study was published Feb. 28, 2013, in the journal Scientific Reports.… read more. “Brain-to-brain interface allows transmission of tactile, motor information between rats”

Call: Cultural Space, a conference at the University of East London

The Centre for Cultural Studies Research at the University of East London invites proposals for Cultural Space, a conference to take place at the UEL Docklands Campus on Friday and Saturday, 18th and 19th October, 2013.

We are interested in presentations which address the problematics of space both as concept and as lived social reality, with a particular emphasis on the tension between spaces of control in the context of contemporary neoliberalism, spaces of resistance and the apocalyptic spaces which emerge from war, forced migration and the failures of consumer capitalism.

What are the politics of space in contemporary contexts? How can we re-think space beyond the public/private divide? How do spatial arts re-configure space and the way in which it is experienced? What new configurations of space may emerge from burgeoning forms of community? How do the theatres of contemporary war force a re-assessment of spatial concepts?… read more. “Call: Cultural Space, a conference at the University of East London”

Hollywood to the FAA: Let Us Use Drones!

Hollywood to the FAA: Let Us Use Drones! (Exclusive)

Published: February 05, 2013
By Ira Teinowitz

Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s …

If the Motion Picture Association of America has its way, it soon could be a camera-equipped pilotless drone shooting the overhead chase scenes for Hollywood’s action thrillers.

The MPAA is pushing the Federal Aviation Administration to allow the use of what have been called “drones” — but in the movie business are far more likely the size of model planes and model helicopters than anything like what the U.S. is using to target terrorists.

Studios see the airborne vehicles as a way to get better long shots with fewer safety risks and at reduced cost. Currently, such drone use is legal in some foreign countries, but not in the U.S.… read more. “Hollywood to the FAA: Let Us Use Drones!”
