We live in a time in which digital technologies, with a special emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), have profoundly redefined practices associated with the sound universe, memory and sharing in a collective context. The processes of creation, circulation and archiving of sound content are no longer limited to the spheres of physical recording or in-person experience, and are now driven by algorithmic systems capable of generating, manipulating and distributing sounds on a large scale.
In this scenario, the dichotomy between “natural sound” — anchored in organic processes and lived memories — and “artificial sound” — produced, transformed and recreated by AI technologies — opens up new horizons for individual and collective listening, while also posing unprecedented challenges in operational, aesthetic and ethical terms. These transformations, inseparable from the dynamics of historical time and the rapid mutations experienced by the media system, impose the need to reevaluate the creation processes, sharing strategies and mechanisms for preserving sound memory in a society increasingly mediated by technology.
In this thematic section, the Radio and Sound Media Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (Sopcom) invites researchers to present proposals that promote critical reflection on the place of sound in radio and other sound media and, in particular, the challenges faced by sound practices in the face of contemporary technological innovations. The aim is to create a broad space for debate and exchange of knowledge that, with eyes (and ears) set on the future, does not forget history or the urgency of caring for the memory of sounds.
Topics of interest for this section include, but are not limited to:
- The role of AI in the creation of sound objects: ethical, aesthetic and epistemological implications of algorithmic intervention in the sound universe
- Social networks as spaces for the circulation, appropriation and resignification of sounds
- The preservation of sound memory: technical, methodological, curatorial and access challenges
- Radio and its sound identity: tradition, contemporary contexts and future challenges
- The place of sound in the practice of journalism and in the creation of informative content
- Podcasts and their potential as a means of archiving, disseminating and preserving individual and collective discourses
- Radio, sound and entertainment
