Following the success of the inaugural event in November 2023, the 2nd European Congress on Disinformation and Fact-Checking is back and will take place on 29 – 30 October 2025 to convene experts, scholars, journalists, policymakers, and practitioners to address the evolving challenges of disinformation in Europe and beyond. Building upon the foundation laid by the first congress, which emphasized the multifaceted impact of disinformation and the importance of international collaboration, this year’s event aims to further explore innovative strategies for combating false information and enhancing fact-checking practices.

SCOPE AND TOPICS

In recent times, the prevalence of disinformation and its detrimental impact on individuals and communities has become a growing concern in society. Recent developments have highlighted the evolving nature of disinformation campaigns.  The 2nd European Congress on Disinformation and Fact-Checking invites researchers from various disciplines to contribute to the discourse on addressing misinformation and proposing technological solutions for promoting genuine information. We encourage interdisciplinary research that combines the expertise of tech and computer scientists and social scientists (journalists, communication experts, lawyers, etc.), as well as other disinformation-related professionals. By actively exploring diverse perspectives, we aim to explore comprehensive strategies that effectively combat disinformation, thereby safeguarding the well-being of both individuals and communities.

Topics of interest for paper submissions include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assessing the authenticity of online information in the age of deepfakes and synthetic media
  2. Evolving challenges posed by generative AI in disinformation and fact-checking
  3. Advanced strategies for debunking dis/misinformation in an AI-driven information landscape
  4. The role of social media platforms in amplifying fake news, rumors, and their societal impact
  5. New machine learning methods, evaluation techniques, and datasets for detecting dis/misinformation
  6. Enhancing media literacy to fight against manipulated content and deepfake misinformation
  7. Fact-checking automation: Opportunities and risks of AI-driven verification tools
  8. Dis/misinformation, political polarization, and its evolving influence on public opinion
  9. The impact of misinformation on global crises: Health, climate, and geopolitics
  10. Cognitive biases, psychological characteristics, and the spread of misinformation
  11. Ethical considerations in AI-assisted information verification
  12. Techniques for ensuring access to and retrieval of verified, genuine online information
  13. Case studies on disinformation and fact-checking explored across various fields, including the electoral process, public health, climate change, geopolitical conflicts, financial markets, and emerging technologies.
  14. Research and funding opportunities for combating disinformation and enhancing fact-checking

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

We invite researchers and scholars to submit short abstracts (maximum 250 words). Authors of accepted abstracts will have the opportunity to present their work either online or in-person during the allocated time at the Congress. Additionally, authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to contribute to the book “From Fake News to Real Solutions: Disinformation, AI, and the Future of Fact-Checking”, which will be published by a renowned SPI Q1 editorial and will be fully open access.

The authors of each accepted abstract will be required a fee of € 180 to help cover related costs. To ensure the highest academic standards, all submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review process for impartial evaluation.

Once your abstract is accepted, authors will receive guidelines for preparing their presentation (online or in-person) as well as instructions for submitting their work as a book chapter (if desired), including the specific format guidelines from the Editorial.
