Deadline for submissions: March 1, 2026
Xiamen University is pleased to announce an international communication conference on “Global Communication and Global Governance,” organized in collaboration with members of the National Communication Association (NCA) and leaders from the Communication University of China (CUC). The conference will be held at Xiamen University, China, from May 29 to 31, 2026.
Under this overarching theme, we invite research presentations that engage broadly with the communication discipline, particularly within the following three thematic tracks:
Theme 1: Digital Communication and AI Integration:
As social, cultural, organizational, and global relations continue to evolve, this track explores how AI and digital technologies are reshaping meaning-making, relationships, institutions, and public life. We invite scholarship addressing human-AI interaction, algorithmic mediation, digital rhetoric, organizational and instructional communication, critical data studies, and the ethical, cultural, and policy dimensions of AI adoption. This track foregrounds dialogue on how communication scholars theorize, critique, and actively shape the future of AI-integrated digital communication. Submissions that engage questions of equity, transparency, governance, and the cultural implications of AI across diverse global contexts are especially encouraged.
Theme 2: Video Trends in Intercultural and International Communication:
From short-form video, proliferating entertainment platforms, and livestreaming to documentaries, viral clips, and transnational media flows, video has become a central site of cultural expression, negotiation, and contestation. This track foregrounds video as a key mode of symbolic action in intercultural and international communication, inviting scholarship that examines how video technologies and practices shape representation, identity, power relations, and cross-cultural understanding. We invite scholarship on platform cultures, digital storytelling, creator and influencer economies, diasporic media, and the transnational circulation of video across linguistic and cultural boundaries, foregrounding dialogue on how evolving video practices are transforming intercultural communication. We welcome perspectives that critically engage how contemporary video trends both enable and constrain intercultural and international dialogue in an increasingly mediated and contested global environment.
Theme 3: Media and Global Governance:
This track explores how media systems, communication technologies, and journalistic practices influence contemporary global governance in the context of profound geopolitical, technological, and social transformations. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, global information flows, platform governance, international public opinion, digital sovereignty, and the role of media in addressing transnational challenges such as climate change, public health crises, and international conflict. Contributions may be theoretical, empirical, or comparative in nature, and should offer original insights into the evolving relationship between media and global governance.
