Call: ECCE 2026, The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics

Call for Papers:

ECCE 2026, The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics
September 15-18, 2026
Siena, Italy
https://ecce2026.unisi.it

Deadline for submission of papers: March 29, 2026

In recent decades, technology has evolved from being a mere tool to becoming a pervasive presence that shapes human behavior, relationships, and values. This growing interdependence calls for a new sustainable and peaceful alliance between humanity and technology — one that prioritizes ethical design, inclusivity, and ecological responsibility. Rather than perceiving technology as a threat or a neutral instrument, societies must cultivate a conscious partnership where innovation serves human and planetary well-being.

In the new humanity-technology ecosystems Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and complex systems should be guided by principles of transparency, empathy, and social justice. Education, production systems aimed at innovation, and policy must work hand in hand to ensure that technological progress strengthens, rather than erodes, human dignity.

By redefining our relationship with technology as cooperative and purpose-driven we can move toward a future where progress and peace coexist in balance.

The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics – ECCE- is an annual event that aims to bring together researchers, academics, and professionals, promoting the sharing and discussion of knowledge, new perspectives, experiences, and innovations. This event brings together academics, PhD students, Early Career Researchers and scholars of different disciplines, including Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Science, to mention a few, and practitioners interested in the practical, social and ethical aspects of the explanation of the models emerging from the discipline of Cognitive Ergonomics. PAPER SUBMISSION AND IMPORTANT DATES

ECCE 2026 welcomes original contributions that advance the field of cognitive ergonomics, whether through theoretical innovation, methodological development, or practical application. The conference invites high-quality long papers, short papers, and work-in-progress submissions that present original research and practical insights. Contributions should meaningfully enhance understanding and practice in cognitive ergonomics and human–media interaction, interpreted in its broadest sense.

Research papers will appear in the Proceedings of ECCE 2026, which will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Eventual multimedia materials will be published as source material in the ACM Digital Library. A list of proceedings can be found at this https://dl.acm.org/conference/ecce/proceedings.

Paper submission: 29 March 2026
Reviews notification: 17 May 2026
Final submission: 14 June 2026

PUBLICATIONS

The proceedings will collect all papers accepted through a rigorous peer-review process and will be published in the ACM Digital Library. In addition, a selection of the six most relevant papers will be featured in the journal Behaviour and Information Technology -BIT- further expanding the visibility and dissemination of the work. All accepted long and short papers will also be indexed in Scopus and WoS.

DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM

ECCE 2026’s doctoral consortium is a full day session taking place on Tuesday, September 15th 2026. It is intended for doctoral students working in the broad field of cognitive ergonomics and human-media interaction.

The doctoral colloquium is an opportunity to present issues of concern relating to doctoral studies, meet fellow doctoral students, and get extensive feedback from the chairs and other participants. It is primarily intended for students in the middle of their studies.

We especially welcome submissions that address the conference theme: Toward a new sustainable and peaceful alliance between humanity and technology.

Doctoral students accepted for the doctoral consortium receive full registration sponsorship from the European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics (EACE).

CALL FOR EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS

The European Association for Cognitive Ergonomics (EACE), sponsors of the ECCE conferences, have an exciting new initiative, specifically targeted at Early Career Researchers (ECR). We would like to encourage younger CE researchers to become much more involved in the future of EACE and ECCE. It is intended that the conference fee for participating ECRs will be fixed at half-price of the early-registration cost. You will also be able to present your own work if a paper submission is accepted. Those eligible should have a recently awarded doctorate – within the last 5 years – and may come from academia, industry, consultancy or research institutions. If you are interested in finding out more look at our website (https://ecce2026.unisi.it/) to keep up-to-date and to contact us for further information and application information.

DESIGNATHON

We invite designers, developers, researchers, and creative minds to take part in a Designathon dedicated to video games that drive positive change. The challenge is to imagine and prototype games that can make a difference for society, the environment, and individual well-being.

Over an intensive and collaborative experience, participants will work in multidisciplinary teams to explore how game design can foster social inclusion, environmental awareness, and personal growth. The call is “Play with purpose, design for change”.

GENERAL ORGANIZERS
