The Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position on Human-Machine Communication with a focus on robot interactions.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The successful candidate will work with Dr. Rhonda McEwen, Canada Research Chair in Tactile Interfaces, Communication and Cognition and editor of the Sage Handbook of Human-Machine Communication, as the supervising professor, research associates, and students, on the design, execution and dissemination of results for a study on the social and cognitive consequences of human-robot communicative interactions – including investigating issues of learning and communication within communicative engagements. The project is part of a Social Science and Humanities Research funded research program. Candidates should have experimental, observational, and quantitative research methods experience.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline such as communications, informatics, industrial engineering, computer science/AI, and information studies. Media studies and other social science backgrounds may also be acceptable depending on the candidate. Knowledge of communication theory, mechatronics/robotics and experience with eye tracking, sensor technologies and data analysis would be valuable. Working knowledge of software/hardware such as Unity, Python, C++, would be an asset.

SALARY: $43,000 per annum plus benefits

This is a two-year appointment and start date is rolling but preference for a start on October 1, 2023 (negotiable).

The normal hours of work are 40-hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (prorated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.
