The KU Leuven Working Group on Philosophy of Technology and the Belgian Royal Military Academy are delighted to announce a 2-day international conference on the interplay between virtue ethics and the philosophy of technology (with one day dedicated to military technologies), to be held (in-person) at the Institute of Philosophy in Leuven, Belgium 19-20 September 2024.
CONFERENCE THEMES:
The conference aims to explore the possibilities for understanding and addressing the ethical, political and societal challenges raised by new and emerging technologies through the lens of virtue ethics. One day of the conference will focus particularly on the challenges posed by new and emerging technologies in military contexts. We warmly invite philosophers, ethicists, and researchers from related fields to submit abstracts for papers or panels addressing a wide range of topics including, but not limited to:
- Technology and the (techno-moral) virtues
- Human flourishing in the digital age
- Virtue ethics and AI
- AI ethics guidelines: principles vs. virtues?
- The virtues and specific technologies (social media, autonomous weapons, self-driving cars, social robots, etc.)
- Virtue ethical approaches to technology design and development
- Virtue ethics and RRI, Value-Sensitive Design, etc.
- Human-enhancement and the virtues
- Technology and environmental virtue ethics
- The impact of technology on military virtues
- Virtue ethics and technology in the Just War Tradition
- Virtue ethics and technology in managing post-conflict responsibility
- The political use of (military) technologies

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
We welcome submissions of abstracts for papers (20 minutes) and panels (up to 90 minutes in total). All speakers must participate in-person. Abstracts should be submitted in two documents. For papers, the first document contains the presentation title, abstract (max. 400 words), and 3-5 keywords. For panels, the first document describes the panel topic (max. 400 words), and gives the titles, abstracts (max. 400 words each), and keywords of three papers to be included in the panel. The second document provides the name(s), affiliation(s), and contact details of the author(s).
SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
Abstracts should be submitted by email to: wgpt@kuleuven.be no later than midnight (Brussels time) on 15 April 2024.
PEER REVIEW PROCESS:
All abstracts will undergo a blind peer-review process by the scientific committee of the conference. Applicants will receive notification of acceptance or rejection on or before 1 June 2024.
