Call: “Machine Teachers in Education” issue of Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Call for Manuscripts

Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Theme: Machine Teachers in Education
https://scholarworks.wmich.edu/jcp/callforpapers.html#machine

Guest Editor: Jihyun Kim, Ph.D., Nicholson School of Communication and Media, University of Central Florida, USA.

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2020

OBJECTIVE

With ongoing technology development, it is highly likely that education will begin its new era by incorporating nonhuman agents as a tutor, assistant, advisor, or/and teacher, so-called “machine teachers.” Although human teachers may not be completely replaced by machine, some people argue machines would start assisting and replacing teachers in some areas in near future. In fact, this trend already arrived when an AI (Artificial Intelligence) teaching assistant debuted in at a university in the U.S.

In this regard, the goal of this special section is to provide a space that synthesizes research studies that explore the role of machine teachers in education. Considering that it is an emerging area, we welcome an exploratory study, pilot study, or preliminary study that provide foundation for this line of research.… read more. “Call: “Machine Teachers in Education” issue of Journal of Communication Pedagogy”

Ghost Pacer AR gives runners their own holographic training partner

[Taking advantage of social presence, a new Kickstarter project creates a 3D holographic training partner for runners. The original version of this VRScout story includes three more pictures and a 2:29 minute video; the PR Newswire press release includes this:

“’Nothing is a perfect substitute for running with another person,’ says CEO AbdurRahman ‘AR’ Bhatti, a former all-state cross-country runner himself. ‘But racing against a holographic avatar that you can train with anywhere at any time is the next best thing.’”

For more information see the Kickstarter page and an interview with AbdurRahman Bhatti from NewsTalk Florida. –Matthew]

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The virtual CUI@CSCW workshop will bring together the burgeoning communities centred on the design, development, application, and study of Conversational User Interfaces (CUIs). We will examine the challenges involved in transforming CUIs into everyday computing devices capable of supporting collaborative activities across space and time. Additionally, we intend to establish a cohesive CUI community and research agenda within CSCW and examine the roles in which CSCW research can contribute insights into understanding how CUIs are or can be used in various settings. By bringing together existing researchers and new ideas in this space, we intend to foster a strong community and enable potential future collaborations.… read more. “Call: Conversational User Interfaces Workshop at CSCW 2020 Conference”

These motorized shoes could be the key to making virtual reality fully immersive

[The design is still evolving, but this short story from Gizmodo describes a new VR accessory that could increase presence for VR users. See the original story for two videos, and for much more information including several videos, see the designer/creator Alexander Evans’ blog. –Matthew]

These Motorized Shoes Could Be the Key to Making Virtual Reality Fully Immersive

Joanna Nelius, Staff Reporter, Reviews at Gizmodo. Formerly PC Gamer, Maximum PC.
August 5, 2020

There’s no shortage of people trying to make virtual reality gaming a more immersive experience. There are VR arenas where people strap on PC backpacks and play in a pre-programmed area. There are gloves and shoes, and even VR treadmills. Nothing seems to have that full immersion factor, though, either because the person playing still needs to sit down to game, the haptic technology isn’t responsive enough, or because the headset is too large and expensive.… read more. “These motorized shoes could be the key to making virtual reality fully immersive”

Call: First-Person Research in HCI (special issue of ACM TOCHI)

Call for Papers

ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction
Special issue on First-Person Research in HCI

Guest Editors:
Audrey Desjardins (University of Washington)
Andres Lucero (Aalto University)
Marta Cecchinato (Northumbria University)
Oscar Tomico Plasencia (ELISAVA and Eindhoven University of Technology)
Carman Neustaedter (Simon Fraser University)

Abstract submission deadline:  September 8, 2020
Full paper submission deadline:  October 22, 2020

As an addition to the array of HCI methodological tools, first-person research methods offer a chance for researchers to not only investigate the mundane, ongoing, and ubiquitous presence of technology in everyday life, but also to acknowledge their own positionality in research and design, and to rely on first-hand experience as a mode of knowing. This shift in epistemological commitments has the potential of yielding rich, honest, and authentic reflections and insights about our ongoing lives with technology. We have seen, for example, the benefits of researchers using methods such as autoethnography, duoethnography, autobiographical design, autoethnographical research through design, micro-phenomenology, someaesthetics, design memoirs, and more.… read more. “Call: First-Person Research in HCI (special issue of ACM TOCHI)”

Future presence: A day in the metaverse

[For many years I’ve assigned students a “future of media” exercise in which they imagine what their mediated experiences will be like in 20 years; this thought-provoking story from Forbes does something similar by describing a near-future in which technologies have evolved to evoke many different kinds of presence and change the nature of work and play. See the original version for two more images and two videos. –Matthew]

New immersive film takes you to Notre Dame Cathedral before the fire and during reconstruction

[Frenchly reports on a new 360 degree film at the FlyView attraction in Paris, and available for free viewing via Oculus VR, that features footage from before and after the fire that nearly destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral. The description from Flyview says viewers will “Teleport into the cathedral in virtual reality, as if you were really there.” See the original story for a 52 second video (also available via YouTube); the story also includes an embedded Tweet from Targo that notes that the documentary “Rebuilding Notre Dame” is “competing for a nomination to the #Emmys2020 in the Original Interactive Program category.” –Matthew]

Classic definitions of communication focus on the process of exchange of information — instrumental and expressive — and with the goal of mutual understanding of the content among the participants. The structure and format of in-person communication is a particular instantiation of engagement for which we have accumulated a wealth of research within the field. As we move to remote and technology-mediated communication and then to human-machine communication new opportunities and constraints have arisen — particularly if we return to the notion that understanding emerges through communicative interactions.

With new forms of technology, how understanding is acquired, developed, built together and shared is as much a question of how the technological systems are designed, as it is of how they are deployed and used (Collins et al.,… read more. “Call: “Understanding each other when communicating in emerging technology mediated environments” – Comm Studies issue”

See old New York appear before your eyes with new augmented reality app

[TimeOut New York reports on a new augmented reality project that “bring[s] the streets and buildings of old New York to life before your eyes.” I particularly like the inclusion of a separate “immersive” mode that omits the visual and audio information available in other modes. The original story includes two other images and a 6:54 minute video (also available via YouTube). The mentioned coverage in Untapped New York adds the detail that the two creators are both NYU undergraduate students. –Matthew]
