Theoriz recreates the Holodeck with AR tech and projectors

[The mixed reality room described in this Engadget story looks like it creates compelling presence illusions (a Mashable video says it “could have you questioning what’s reality”). See the original story for two videos including the 3:11 minute demo video mentioned (also available on Vimeo). For more, see the Theoriz website and Vimeo page, and a related post from February 2016 in ISPR Presence News. –Matthew]

Théoriz recreates the Holodeck with AR tech and projectors

A French company has created a new kind of dramatic, Illumiroom-like reality.

Steve Dent
June 28, 2017

If you had to list the most mind-blowing tech demos in recent memory, Microsoft’s Hololens AR headset would need to be included, as would its projector-enhanced Illumiroom. A company called Théoriz from Lyon, France has married both of those things to create a “mixed reality room” that uses projector tech, motion tracking and augmented reality together.… read more. “Theoriz recreates the Holodeck with AR tech and projectors”

Call: Interaction with Agents and Robots: Different Embodiments, Common Challenges (Workshop at IVA 2017)

CALL FOR PAPERS

The international full day workshop:
“Interaction with Agents and Robots: Different Embodiments, Common Challenges”
In conjunction with the 17th International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVA) (http://iva2017.org/)
Stockholm, Sweden
August 27, 2017
Website: http://iar.ict.usc.edu/

Submission deadline: July 15, 2017

I. AIM AND SCOPE

As hardware and enabling technologies such as speech recognition improve, virtual agents and robots are increasingly able to autonomously take part in “face-to-face” interactions with people. But engaging in these types of interactions successfully requires the complex coordination of verbal and nonverbal behaviour, as well as the ability to respond to the verbal and/or nonverbal cues of a human interaction partner.

Researchers in the field of virtual agents and human-robot interactions have been concerned with these problems, and these fields provide many examples of implemented software systems that can give useful insights for researchers of the two communities.… read more. “Call: Interaction with Agents and Robots: Different Embodiments, Common Challenges (Workshop at IVA 2017)”

Is it unethical to design robots to resemble humans?

[This story from Quartz succinctly lays out the key ethical questions raised by medium-as-social-actor presence; the answers depend on our understanding of human nature and the malleability of our behavior. The emphasis is on the peril rather than promise – the author doesn’t say much about the potential advantages of human-like technologies (which include for me, the reduced likelihood of my damaging them in a fleeting moment of anger). The original version of the story includes two videos. –Matthew]

Call: Symposium on Game Sound and Game Music

Call for Papers: Symposium on Game Sound and Game Music
University of Jyväskylä, Finland
November 16th 2017
Conference website: http://r.jyu.fi/oSU

Submission deadline: 11 August 2017

Who doesn’t remember the music of Super Mario or Pacman? Music and sound are an important element of game-play experience as well as an important part of game interfaces giving crucial information to the player. Some games are focused on music, or use sound as a tool of game interaction. One could even argue that other applications could learn from the way sound and music are used in games. Developing technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality also demand new approaches to sound design.

Despite their importance, audio elements of games have gained only fleeting attention within game studies. We are looking for new and innovative approaches to audio in game research. What are the unexplored frontiers of game sound and game music that research should look into?… read more. “Call: Symposium on Game Sound and Game Music”

Call: ‘Information Architecture and the Design of the Infosphere’ – Philosophy and Technology special issue

Special Issue of Philosophy and Technology on “Information Architecture and the Design of the Infosphere”

Expressions of interest due: 26 July 2007

The question of what has to be done to ensure that information can be obtained, organised, and be placed in the right context is a concern that the philosophy of information shares with information architecture; the practice – and associated discipline – of deciding how to arrange the parts of something to be understandable (“What is Information Architecture?” The Information Architecture Insitute).

A dialogue between these two disciplines was initiated during a workshop held at the University of Oxford in June 2016. It included presentations that address the role of design as it applies to the conception of informational artefacts and the way we shape and organise the infosphere by Vicky Buser, Luke Church, Terence Fenn, Andrew Hinton, Jason Hobbs, Dan Klyn, Andrea Resmini, and Konstantin Weiss.… read more. “Call: ‘Information Architecture and the Design of the Infosphere’ – Philosophy and Technology special issue”
