IMAX: The ultimate movie experience

You Haven’t Seen ‘Frances Ha’ Until You’ve Seen It In IMAX

ISSUE 49•22 • May 30, 2013
By Noah Baumbach

As a director, I have always strived to present my work to the audience in such a way that it accurately reflects my artistic vision in its purest form, so that what is displayed on the screen is as close as possible to my original conception of the film. This has never been more true than for my most recent project, Frances Ha, a lively paean to youth and dreams, and one which absolutely must be viewed in the film format that it was intended to be viewed in, which of course is IMAX.… read more. “Satire: You haven’t seen ‘Frances Ha’ until you’ve seen it in IMAX”

Call: Interacting with Presence: HCI and the sense of presence in computer-mediated environments

Interacting with Presence: HCI and the sense of presence in computer-mediated environments

www.presence-research.com

Editors:
Giuseppe Riva, John Waterworth, Dianne Murray

Introduction

Our experience of using and interacting with the newest computer information technologies is profoundly affected by the extent to which we feel ourselves to be really ‘present’ in the computer-mediated world that the technology makes available to us. This feeling, which is described as ‘Presence’, is the “feeling of being inside the mediated world”.

It is a crucial and increasingly necessary element in both design and usage of many recent and developing interactive technologies. In the same way that ‘feeling present’, or consciously ‘being there’, in the physical world around us is based upon perception, physical action and activity in that world, so the feeling of presence in a technologically-mediated environment is a function of the possibilities for interaction.

Unlike the physical world, the extent to which presence is experienced in an interactive context can be manipulated by design.… read more. “Call: Interacting with Presence: HCI and the sense of presence in computer-mediated environments”

Crossing the dividing line between human and replicant

The Dividing Line Between Human and Replicant Already Happened

by Brian S Hall  |  May 27th, 2013

In the film, Iron Man 3, the good guys encase themselves in tech. The bad guys put the tech inside their bodies. This is telling. Hollywood – and most of America – remains oddly uncomfortable with the notion of technology which “alters” our self – even as it alters everything we see, hear and touch.

No surprise, then, that Tony Stark, the man inside the Iron Man suit, fires off witty bombs in the vain hope it will ease his mental suffering rather than taking a pill – blue, red or otherwise – to help resolve his constant panic attacks.

This idea that the tech we place inside us is to be feared, unlike all the tech swirling outside of us, is a dated and dying relic of our fading, twentieth-century upbringing.… read more. “Crossing the dividing line between human and replicant”

Presence and Games – An interview with Paul Skalski, Ph.D.

Posted by Jim Cummings on Dec 5, 2012

Back in October I gave a talk at the 2012 conference for the International Society for Presence Researchers.  While there I sat in on a number of fascinating presentations, including several by Dr. Paul Skalski, professor and researcher in the School of Communication at Cleveland State University.  Amongst other topics, Paul discussed the potential relationship between gameplay motivation and a player “need for presence.”  I recently followed up with him to hear more about his research, as well as his thoughts on presence as part of the player experience and how developers might better design for presence.

Jim Cummings (JC):  Can you tell us a little about your background as a researcher and player of games?read more. “Presence and Games – An interview with Paul Skalski, Ph.D.”

Call: Sex and Sexuality in Video Games (book chapters)

Call for Chapter Proposals, Book Project on Video Games

“Rated M for Mature: Sex and Sexuality in Video Games” (tentative title)

The word sex has many implications when it is used in connection with video games. As game studies scholars have argued, games are player-driven experienced. Players must participate in processes of play to move the game forward. You must contribute to keep the game moving forward. The addition of content that incorporates sex and/or sexuality adds complexity that other media do not share. This project seeks to further develop our understanding of the practices and activities of video games, specifically focusing on the intersection of games with sexual content. From the supposed scandal of ‘Hot Coffee’ to the emergence of same-sex romance options in RPGs, this book will explore the concepts of sex and sexuality in the area of video games.… read more. “Call: Sex and Sexuality in Video Games (book chapters)”

FAQ interview with ISPR Presence News managing editor Matthew Lombard

FAQ Interview with ISPR Presence News Managing Editor Matthew Lombard

Here are answers to some frequently (and not-as-frequently) asked questions about ISPR Presence News, including a look ahead at some changes on the way.

Q: Where do you get the items in ISPR-PN?

Matthew Lombard (ML): Anywhere I can – Google news searches; academic and professional email lists and LinkedIn groups; items that I read or see in the newspaper, on TV, and on general and tech news web sites; things people send my way. Readers also submit items on the ISPR web site, which is great.

Q. How do you decide which items to post?

ML: I look for items that have a direct connection to different types of telepresence (even though the items often don’t use the term); that are neither too technical nor introductory; that cover the latest technology, research and theory; and that don’t repeat earlier posts.… read more. “FAQ interview with ISPR Presence News managing editor Matthew Lombard”
