UC DAVIS – ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN GAME STUDIES AND CRITICAL GAME MAKING
The University of California, Davis invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in game studies and critical game making. The appointee will join a growing interdisciplinary team of researchers engaged in collaborative work on media ecologies and digital humanities. Expertise in game studies and/or game making, evidence of excellence in research, a clear commitment to undergraduate education, and the promise of outstanding teaching at the graduate level are required. Applicants should have theoretical and practical knowledge of game design tools and methods, as well as a strong scholarly profile in theories of gaming, game design, mobile technologies, media archeology, physical computing, or digital art. Experience working in a collaborative environment and/or combining humanities research with critical making is strongly desired. Applicants should be fluent in the material platforms, software processes, and tools involved in producing digital games. Knowledge of media history and cultural theory would be an asset. Appointment will be in one or more of the following departments depending on the candidate’s background: Cinema and Technocultural Studies, Computer Science, Design, English, or Science and Technology Studies. Applicants should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their own field, in addition to teaching survey courses in the department(s) of appointment. The ability to teach contemporary media theory, cultural theory, science studies, and/or philosophy through practice-based studio classes is desired but not required. A Ph.D. in either Media Studies, English, Computer Science, Design, Media Arts, Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, or a related field with a strong emphasis on digital humanities, digital cultures, or computer games should be completed by September 21, 2015.
