ISPR News / Call: PRESENCE 2024 – Help choose location and timing

[Apologies for re-posting but we want to get as much input from the presence community (and beyond) as possible.]

ISPR News and Call for Participation:

Help choose the location and timing of PRESENCE 2024

As those who’ve attended them know, ISPR’s PRESENCE conferences, held in cities from Suffolk, England in 1998 to Prague in 2018 and most recently online during the pandemic, have always been productive and enjoyable professional and social events. They’re single-track, informal and everyone there is interested in presence. The panels are organized and scheduled to take advantage of our physical copresence (!) and encourage interesting, useful, unrushed discussions that continue during breaks and meals.

We’re now planning the first in-person PRESENCE conference since before the pandemic, PRESENCE 2024, and we’d really appreciate your input. Please take literally just a few minutes to fill out a short web survey to tell us your preferences for where and when the presence community will meet next year.… read more. “ISPR News / Call: PRESENCE 2024 – Help choose location and timing”

Preview and Call: The International Journal of Telepresence (IJT)

As many ISPR members and ISPR Presence News readers know, we’ve been working for a long time toward the creation of a new journal focused on presence, an open access journal with no publication charges that is open to a wide variety of interdisciplinary presence-related topics, research methods, and presentation formats. We’re not quite ready for an official roll-out but you can now visit the website of ISPR’s International Journal of Telepresence (IJT) at https://ijtelepresence.org. There you’ll find not only the detailed Call for Submissions (excerpted below) but two excellent initial published articles by our colleagues (direct links below). The journal site will be closely linked to the ISPR website and highlighted at the top of each ISPR Presence News post. We consider IJT your journal, so we welcome your feedback and suggestions as well as your involvement as author, reviewer and in any other role(s) in which you’d like to contribute.… read more. “Preview and Call: The International Journal of Telepresence (IJT)”

ISPR News: Thank you to PRESENCE 2020 participants, attendees, co-organizers

Thank you to the 160+ people who registered for and attended at least part of the PRESENCE 2020 conference on Friday (October 23), especially those who presented their work at the event. While we had to adjust to the limitations in presence caused by meeting via Zoom, I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to retain the sense of informal connection and community of the previous in-person PRESENCE conferences. And as usual I left the event energized by new ideas and a reinforced sense of the value of our diverse and evolving interests in, research about, and applications of presence. Of course we still look forward to meeting in person when circumstances allow, hopefully next fall, and to retaining a virtual component in our future conferences.

A special thanks to fellow organizers of the conference Jihyun Kim (University of Central Florida), Eugene Kukshinov (Temple University), Kun Xu (University of Florida) and Hocheol Yang (Cal Poly University) and the many other people who helped make the event possible.… read more. “ISPR News: Thank you to PRESENCE 2020 participants, attendees, co-organizers”

Call / ISPR News: PRESENCE 2020 changes due to pandemic

[As with so many conferences planned for this summer and fall, ISPR is changing our plans for PRESENCE 2020. We’ll meet online on October 23 via Zoom for presentations and discussions about our usual wide variety of presence topics as well as the many impacts of Coronavirus on presence phenomena now and going forward. We’ll also leave time for informal social interactions. More details are below; feel free to be in touch with any questions.

Please distribute this call through your professional networks, consider submitting your work by the new August 1 deadline, and join us for the first online presence conference this fall. No one would have wished for the surreal, difficult time we’re living through but it’s never been a more interesting and important time to experience and study presence.
