Call: DeSForM 2019 – 11th International Conference on Design and Semantics of Form and Movement

Call for Papers

DeSForM 2019 | Beyond Intelligence
11th International Conference on Design and Semantics of Form and Movement
9-11 October 2019
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston
https://desform19.org

Submission deadline: March 1, 2019

SCOPE AND BACKGROUND

DeSForM | Beyond Intelligence is dedicated to presenting the latest research in the fields of design and technology.

DeSForM (Design and Semantics of Form and Movement) seeks to present current research into the nature, character and behavior of emerging typologies of connected and intelligent objects within adaptive systems.

In its 11th edition, we challenge design scholars to start thinking beyond designing for and with intelligence embedded into single artifacts, to broaden their focus and start addressing designing for distributed, hyperconnected, and complex intelligent ecosystems, and how their meaning, experience, and ethics can be approached in this new landscape.

Submissions should be focused on one or more of the following themes.… read more. “Call: DeSForM 2019 – 11th International Conference on Design and Semantics of Form and Movement”

‘Digital smell’ technology could let us transmit odors in online chats

[The practical and realistic illusion of smells may, or may not, eventually be part of our presence experiences. This story from NBC News provides a frank status report. –Matthew]

‘Digital smell’ technology could let us transmit odors in online chats

“It’s not just about the smell. It is part of a whole, integrated virtual reality or augmented reality.”

By Wynne Parry
November 27, 2018

Having a video chat with a friend or colleague is all about seeing and hearing — at least for now. But experiments conducted recently in Malaysia suggest it may be possible to develop “electric smell” technology capable of conveying odors as well as sights and sounds.

The research is preliminary and not without its critics.… read more. “‘Digital smell’ technology could let us transmit odors in online chats”

Call: Video Games and Cultural Heritage – Special issue of International Journal of Heritage Studies

Call for Papers: Video Games and Cultural Heritage

Special Issue, intended for International Journal of Heritage Studies (Taylor & Francis)

Edited by Xenia Zeiler and Suzie Thomas (University of Helsinki)

Abstract submissions deadline: February 15, 2019

In this themed issue we explore the relationships between video games and the representation, interpretation, construction and creation of cultural heritage. Areas open to discussion and analysis can cover the whole spectrum of video games, from digital tools with educational content, augmented and virtual reality (VR and AR), mobile apps to various single or multiplayer gaming scenarios. As much as we define video games in a broad way, cultural heritage is also understood in broad, holistic terms, including intangible heritage, state-sanctioned heritage representations and so-called dissonant or ambivalent heritage.

We invite submissions that relate to this broad but targeted theme, including but not limited to papers that consider the following questions:

  • What types of heritage identities, representations, constructions and/or applications are expressed in video games?

Researchers and the public gain new insights from VR simulation of a dead star

[Aside from just being very cool, the application of virtual reality described in this story from The Harvard Gazette is providing researchers with new insights and “experts and non-experts alike” with “awe moments.” See the original for a second image and an animated graphic. –Matthew]

Stepping inside a dead star

Team uses detailed data to create a virtual-reality display of what’s left after explosion

By Juan Siliezar, Harvard Staff Writer
December 21, 2018

Cassiopeia A, the youngest known supernova remnant in the Milky Way, is the remains of a star that exploded almost 400 years ago. The star was approximately 15 to 20 times the mass of our sun and sat in the Cassiopeia constellation, almost 11,000 light-years from earth.… read more. “Researchers and the public gain new insights from VR simulation of a dead star”

Study: VR may be effective treatment for Chronic Nightmare Disorder

[A potentially valuable application of presence-evoking technology is described in this story from the Center for Mind and Culture (CMAC); see the original version for more images and a 2:41 minute video (also available via Vimeo). For more information see coverage in PsyPost and the published study via APA PsycNET. –Matthew]

Virtual Reality for Nightmare Disorder

Nightmares may be a common nuisance, but, for those with Chronic Nightmare Disorder, they are a debilitating hurdle to daily life. Chronic Nightmares worsen depression and anxiety, and are particularly difficult for those suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injuries. Existing treatments require time and energy that many patients just don’t have. Even more worrisome, treatments known to be partially effective, such as various kinds of exposure and image rehearsal therapy, run the risk of re-traumatizing participants by using their own traumatic imagery in the process.… read more. “Study: VR may be effective treatment for Chronic Nightmare Disorder”
