Call for Papers

The Fourth British Society of Aesthetics Postgraduate Conference:
Movement and Aesthetics
27 – 28 April 2018
University of Durham, UK

Keynote Speakers:
Associate Professor Barbara Gail Montero, CUNY
Dr Jenny Judge, NYU

Deadline for abstracts: January 7th 2018

We are pleased to invite abstracts for submission to the Fourth BSA Postgraduate Conference, Movement and Aesthetics. This two-day conference will provide an opportunity for postgraduates to present their work in a supportive and stimulating environment, and to interact with each other and with established members of the academic community.

The aim of this postgraduate conference is to examine the relation between movement and aesthetics. There are a number of philosophical puzzles pertaining to movement which have been raised in relation to various art forms including dance, music, film, drama, and visual art forms – painting, sculpture, photography. A question that is not restricted to these art forms concerns the possibility to have an aesthetic experience of one’s own movements. The concept of movement lies at the intersection between aesthetics, metaphysics, phenomenology, and philosophy of mind; as such, this conference aims to bring together aestheticians but also students specialising in other philosophical areas. We thus invite submissions of postgraduate aestheticians and postgraduates whose areas of specialisation lie outside of aesthetics. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The experiential character of dance and bodily movements
  • Movement and music
  • Movement in static art forms
  • Movement and films
  • Movement and emotions
  • Movement in Non-Western Aesthetics

Conference Organisers: Salomé Jacob, Patrick Hinds, Julia Tinland

Please submit an abstract no longer than 600 words to j.c.tinland@durham.ac.uk (this word limit does not include the bibliography) by January 7th 2018. All submissions must be prepared for blind review so please do not include identifying information in your abstract.

Accepted postgraduates will be given 25 minutes to present their paper, followed by 20 minutes of discussion.

Travel bursaries of a maximum amount of £80 will be available for accepted students to contribute towards the cost of transportation and/or accommodation.
