This year, the International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling (ICIDS 2017) will take place in Funchal, Madeira Islands, Portugal and be hosted by the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute.

ICIDS has its origin in a series of related international conferences that ran between 2001 and 2007. Since 2008, ICIDS became the premier annual venue that gathers researchers, developers, practitioners and theorists to present and share the latest innovations, insights and techniques in the expanding field of interactive storytelling and the technologies that support it. The field re-groups a highly dynamic and interdisciplinary community, in which narrative studies, computer science, interactive and immersive technologies, the arts, and creativity converge to develop new expressive forms in a myriad of domains that include artistic projects, interactive documentaries, cinematic games, serious games, assistive technologies, edutainment, pedagogy, museum science, advertising and entertainment, to mention a few. The conference has a long-standing tradition of bringing together academia, industry, designers, developers and artists into an interdisciplinary dialogue through a mix of keynote lectures, long and short article presentations, posters, workshops, and very lively demo sessions. Authors should clarify for which category to which they are submitting.

The refereed proceedings of ICIDS 2017 will be published as a volume in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) “Interactive Storytelling” series.

TOPIC AREAS

ICIDS welcomes contributions from a large range of fields and disciplines related to interactive storytelling. We encourage original contributions in the forms of research papers, position papers, posters and demonstrations, presenting new scientific results, innovative theories, novel technological implementations, case studies and creative artistic projects in the field of Interactive Digital Storytelling and its possible applications in different domains. We particularly welcome research on topics in the following five areas:

BRAVE NEW IDEAS

We invite papers that explore highly innovative ideas and/or paradigm shifts in conventional theory and practice of interactive storytelling. We seek to draw attention to methods that differ from the state of the art in practice or theory and demonstrate potential for changed ways of thinking. These papers may not be “complete” in the “traditional” manner in the sense that it may not be possible to have experimental results comparing other related efforts or that they may not have large, publicly available data sets to be used for performance comparison. The aim is to establish a roadmap for the next 5 years as a community guideline for the development of the field.

THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS

  • The role of the user/reader in interactive storytelling
  • The role of the author/designer in interactive storytelling
  • Computable narrative models inspired by cognitive science, narratology, drama studies, and related disciplines
  • Theories and aesthetics of interactive storytelling
  • Narratology for interactive media
  • Disciplinary analysis of interactive storytelling research

  • Methods/Frameworks for testing user experience in interactive storytelling

WORKSHOPS

Workshops will take place on the 14th November. They can vary in length, from half a day to a full day. Workshops can have different formats. For example, they can be informed by position papers, or practical sessions including one or more tutorials. Participation in workshops will be free of charge. Proposals for workshops should be two to four pages in length, use the Springer LNCS format, and include the following information:

  1. A brief technical description of the workshop, explaining:
    • the topic and goals,
    • expected outcomes,
    • format and proposed schedule,
    • equipment/resources needed to participate (if any),
    • a short draft of the ‘call for participation,’
    • maximum number of participants (as indicative number, minimum should be 10).
  2. The names, affiliations and email addresses of the proposed organizing committee. This committee should consist of two to four people recognized in the area.
  3. The primary contact for the organizing committee.
  4. If available, a list of tentatively confirmed attendees.

Workshop organizers must submit their calls for participation to icids2017workshops [at] m-iti [dot] org.

Once a workshop is accepted, both ICIDS and the workshop organizers are responsible for publicizing the workshop and soliciting potential participants.

DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM

The Doctoral Consortium is an opportunity for PhD students is areas related with the topics of ICIDS to present their research work, at a stage where feedback from the community might be beneficial. Students will discuss the work with experts in the area and with peers in a friendly atmosphere where discussion and contributions will be encouraged. Students should have defined their research plan, and can be in intermediate or advanced stages of their research. The work should not be completed in order to take advantage of the feedback from the Doctoral Consortium.

Submission:

  • Short paper (max 4 pages in LNCS Format) describing the research work, results, status and next steps. The paper will be published in the proceedings.
  • CV of the PhD candidate (1-2 pages)
  • A statement of expected results and benefits of participating in the Doctoral Consortium (1 page)
  • A letter of the supervisor addressing the benefits of participating in the Doctoral Consortium at this stage of the research work (1 page)

Accepted submissions will be distributed to all participants and to the members of the panel in order to prepare for the discussions during the Doctoral Consortium sessions.
Additional information about how to prepare for the Doctoral Consortium will be provided following acceptance.

Costs for Doctoral Consortium Participation:

Applicants who are selected to participate in the doctoral consortium will have free access to the entire conference as well. Travel, accommodation and subsistence will be at the participants own expenses.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS MESSAGE

ICIDS 2017 Student Volunteer team is the core activity that keeps the conference organized and running smoothly, delivering the best experience that attendees and speakers are looking for. As a student volunteer, you will have the opportunity to get full conference pass providing you access to the seminars, workshops, cutting edge researchers in Storytelling, and more! Accepted students will be expected to show up on Monday (November 13th) afternoon to take part in an orientation session. During the conference your activities will include supporting the registration process, hosting and guiding people over the different venues of the conference, helping exhibitors in building up and taking down their demos. Consequently, you will be present until the end of the conference, until Friday (November 17th). Throughout these four days of conference, you will have around 20 hours of work. This should give you plenty of free time to meet with other visitors and attend various activities throughout the conference.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older; be high school, undergraduate, or graduate students enrolled full time for at least one semester during the 2016-2017 academic year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Accepted students are expected to fulfill the following:

  • Attend the orientation session on November 13th, Monday.
  • Show up on time to for your shifts.
  • Serve at least 20 hours of voluntary work during the four days of the conference.

Examples of the conference duties:

  • Attendees registration.
  • Monitoring doors.
  • Supporting contributors.
  • Providing general assistance to conference attendees.

APPLICATION

To apply for becoming a student volunteer you need to provide the following materials via email:

  • Name, contact information, affiliation;
  • Scanned copy of your student ID card;
  • Educational background;
  • Conferences you have attended before;
  • Any previous experience(s) as a student volunteer;
  • Whether you have submitted or are planning to submit a paper to ICIDS 2017;
  • A one-page overview of your research area, interests and their relevance to the ICIDS conference.
