Assistant Professor in Music and Media, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The Department of the Arts in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in music and media. We seek a musician whose work demonstrates creative, critical, and technological engagement with music composition and sound design in one or more of the following areas: games; film and video; and augmented, mixed and virtual reality environments. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in game design and development, and who are capable of contributing to emerging research directions in computational media and social music networks.

The Department of the Arts has a 40-year history of innovation in electronic arts, offering unique undergraduate degrees, a nationally-ranked MFA degree, and a Ph.D. in Electronic Arts.

The successful candidate will have experience in music composition, music performance, sound design, or audio engineering, as well as expertise in sound design for interactive media. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate curricula in music and the sonic arts and the program in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences, a diverse interdisciplinary, inter-departmental faculty dedicated to the design, development, and creation of games and simulations.

Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest technological university. With approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students from across the country and around the world, the university offers more than 145 programs at the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral levels. Rensselaer is located in Troy, New York, the heart of the Tech Valley region of the Hudson River Valley. The university’s Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) offers scholars and students opportunities for creative interdisciplinary research in the arts, performance technologies, science, and engineering.

Candidates must possess a terminal degree or foreign degree equivalent in music, audio engineering, or the interactive arts, including games. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in related topics, such as music and sound fundamentals, music theory, electroacoustic composition, sound recording, composition and sound design for games, and game design. The incumbent will be expected to develop and maintain a substantial program of research and creative work leading to peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, and/or performances. Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level is strongly desired. Screening of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
