The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to contribute technical knowledge and information management expertise to a EPSRC funded research programme, entitled “Kinetic User Interfaces and Multiuser 3D Virtual Worlds for Older People”. The aim of the proposed research programme is to conduct a detailed investigation on how Kinetic User Interfaces can be employed effectively to design novel 3D interfaces and interaction techniques for multiuser virtual worlds accessible to older people by modelling their behaviour whilst interacting with these technologies, developing and evaluating prototypes, as well as deriving detailed design recommendations for innovative 3D technology to support healthy ageing. The project is a partnership with SilverFit (http://www.silverfit.nl/) and AgeUK (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/).

The Person

You will hold a PhD degree or equivalent (or near completion) in either Software Engineering, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction or other relevant area.  You will have previous experience in developing 3D software prototype applications along with user research and group facilitation.  With strong software engineering and programming skills you will possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and have knowledge of statistical analysis.  You will have the ability to work in a team, and to work towards project aims and objectives, and their associated deadlines.

The Department

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts has an excellent reputation for both its teaching and research. Based in the Jennison Building on the Canterbury Campus, the School has 27 academic staff members, with both academic and industrial experience, as well as a number of specialist visiting lecturers. With strong industrial links, much of our research is supported by commercial organisations; there is also a range of industrially sponsored prizes for best students in each of our years. The person appointed to this post will join the Digital Media Research Group, which has research interests in a range of relevant topic areas.
