Ball State University is inviting applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position, with an emphasis in human-computer interaction, programming for digital media, user experience, and emerging media design and development available August, 2017, in the ACEJMC-accredited Department of Journalism.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:  The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the Emerging Media Design & Development Center’s Master’s degree program.  Assigned course topics in human-computer interaction may include theories and frameworks in HCI, usability and user-experience evaluative methods, design thinking, information management, and/or emerging media design and development.  Tenure-track faculty must also actively present juried/peer-reviewed creative endeavors and/or publish scholarly research in areas related to emerging media design and development, human-computer interaction, design thinking or related areas; serve on department, collegiate and university committees as assigned; and perform other duties as assigned by the department chairperson.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Earned doctoral degree in information systems, computer science, human-computer interaction, digital journalism, media informatics, or other related field by time of appointment; ability to teach usability and user-experience methods, theories and frameworks in human-computer interaction, design thinking and/or emerging media design and development a defined scholarly research agenda and/or external juried/peer-reviewed creative endeavor plan.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Professional experience in computer science, human-computer interaction, strategic communication or a related field; proficiency in front-end web and mobile development; knowledge of coding languages specific to communication design; evidence of teaching in the area of computer science, human-computer interaction, emerging media or related fields; graduate-level teaching experience; scholarly research record with corresponding publications and/or successful record of external juried/peer-reviewed creative endeavors.

The Department of Journalism in the College of Communication, Information, and Media has approximately 1,000 majors.  The department is housed in state-of-the-art facilities with the latest professional technology in the classrooms and labs (www.bsu.edu/journalism).

The Center for Emerging Media Design & Development is the home for Ball State University’s storytelling lab and master’s degree designed for the 21st century.  The center is a holistic learning environment that pairs a traditional graduate curriculum with a hands-on lab experience in which students work with public and private partners to solve real problems.  The Center’s mission is to advance students’ creative problem-solving skills and developing an advanced, graduate-level workforce that has practical experience in storytelling, applied research, and development in digital strategic communication design (http://www.centerforemdd.com/).
