The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image is an interdisciplinary organization made up of scholars interested in cognitive, philosophical, aesthetic, neuro‐physiological, and evolutionary psychological approaches to the analysis of film and other moving‐image media. Members of SCSMI seek to understand, among other things, the ways in which perceptual, psychological and neural processes relate to spectators’ affective responses, to their comprehension of narratives and other film forms, and to the saliency and effects of particular stylistic features of films. Members also raise questions about how artistic strategies, such as narrative construction, audio‐visual technique, and the creation of emotional responses, may be amenable to naturalistic explanations in a cognitive framework. Members are likewise interested in the implications of empirical findings for film theories, as well as philosophical theory‐building and conceptual clarification.
Call for Papers
Papers at the 2013 SCSMI conference will be twenty-five minutes in length, followed by a twenty- minute question and answer period. The twenty-five-minute presentation time includes all audio-visual materials.
Abstracts of proposed papers should be a maximum of 1000 words, exclusive of bibliography, and should be sent to the SCSMI Conference Program Committee at suckfuell@udk-berlin.de as a doc, docx, or rtf-document. Your bibliography should consist of six or fewer items. On a cover sheet (which is removed for reviewing) give your name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a brief biographical statement. Please do not include pictures, figures, or tables.
Each abstract will be reviewed by three members of the conference programming committee in an anonymous procedure using these criteria: reference to the aims of the SCSMI, theoretical foundation, clarity/conciseness, originality/innovation‚ and methodological quality (if applicable). The committee may also take into consideration the need to represent, in the conference presentations, the diversity of interests and methodological approaches of the members of SCSMI.
To give a paper at the 2013 SCSMI conference, the presenter must be a current member of the Society. Non-members who wish to submit a proposal should do so, understanding that if their proposal is accepted, they must join the society before presenting at the conference.
Paper proposals must be received by December 15, 2012. Notice of acceptance will be given by January 31, 2013.
