Call: MobileHCI Workshop on Using Audio and Haptics for Delivering Spatial Information via Mobile Devices

CALL FOR PAPERS:

MobileHCI Workshop on Using Audio and Haptics for Delivering Spatial Information via Mobile Devices

http://www.haptimap.org/events/organized-events/mobilehci.html

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
Lisbon, Portugal

Submission deadline: May 10, 2010

Orientation and navigation are very important skills for getting along in daily life. The acquisition and use of these skills is based on the processing of visual, auditory and sensorimotor/kinesthetic information, denoting the relations between objects, places, and people. This multisensory information gives us cues about directions, distances, speed, headway, traffic, landmarks, obstacles, etc. With the recent availability of global positioning method, of comprehensive GIS systems, of powerful mobile computers and of advanced interaction techniques, multisensory spatial information could now be presented in a personalized, context-aware and intuitive manner.

However, it is still not completely clear how to design, and how and when to present multisensory spatial information on mobile devices. This workshop will initiate a multidisciplinary discussion on these topics.… read more. “Call: MobileHCI Workshop on Using Audio and Haptics for Delivering Spatial Information via Mobile Devices”

Q&A with an avatar researcher

Q&A: A Real Study of Virtual Worlds

By Alice Truong

Students of Ulrike Schultze might know her better by her Second Life avatar, Uskla. That’s because the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business professor utilizes the online game to connect to her students in an unusual way.

Ms. Schultze, who teaches management and information technology, leads both an online and physical classroom — students have the option of attending either or both. But for her, Second Life goes beyond being a teaching tool. Ms. Schultze explored the avatar-self relationship with a paper she presented at the 30th International Conference on Information Systems in Phoenix back in December. With her research, funded by the National Science Foundation, she will write a series of papers that look into the different aspects of these avatar-self relationships.… read more. “Q&A with an avatar researcher”

Job: PhD in novel interactive visual analysis methods at University of Leeds

PhD in Novel Interactive Visual Analysis Methods for 3D Seismic Data

A three-year PhD studentship is available at the University of Leeds (UK) to develop novel methods for analysing and visualising 3D seismic data on interactive gigapixel (Powerwall) displays. This project will improve the ability of geoscientists to understand and analyse the geology revealed by large scale seismic surveys. Significant potential exists for industrial involvement both during the project and after PhD completion, but also for academic advancement. The PhD student will be co-supervised by Dr Roy Ruddle & Dr Hamish Carr (Visualization & Virtual Reality research group, School of Computing) and Dr Douglas Paton (Centre of Integrated Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience (CiPEG), School of Earth and Environment). … read more. “Job: PhD in novel interactive visual analysis methods at University of Leeds”

New Mexico firm thinking beyond military applications for surround-imagery Multifunction Dome technology

[From The Albuquerque Journal via TMCnews]

IMMERSED IN POSSIBILITIES: Duke City firm thinking beyond military applications for surround-imagery Multifunction Dome technology

(Albuquerque Journal (NM) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 3–It doesn’t take much to imagine the commercial potential for the technology Albuquerque’s Game Production Services developed for a first-of-its-kind training simulator for the U.S. Army.

The company recently announced the completion of the Multifunction Dome, an 18-foot-high, 37-foot-wide platform that employs 84 projectors and ultrasurround sound system to create a 360-degree “immersive environment” for the Army’s Air Defense School at Fort Sill, Okla.

For now, the $3.5 million dome will be used to train Stinger missile crews, allowing trainees to interact with overhead aircraft with simulated instruments such as binoculars, radios and global positioning systems.

“That’s not to say we developed it specifically for the Army,” said GPS co-owner Glyn Anderson.… read more. “New Mexico firm thinking beyond military applications for surround-imagery Multifunction Dome technology”

Call: Informing the design of the future urban landscape

informing the design of the future urban landscape

Workshop :: 17th August :: DIS2010 :: Aarhus, Denmark

Workshop website ::

http://informingurbanfutures.wordpress.com/about/

It is envisaged that the urban spaces of the future will be saturated with both visible and hidden media that gather and transmit information. How we as physical beings connect with, interpret and shape the increase of data residing in our environment will be a significant challenge. The forms in which this data will be presented, and how we decide to conceptualise it, is as yet unknown. Will the technologically enriched environment adapt to accommodate human/city contact points, and, in response, how will we choose to interact with and navigate through, this information landscape? This workshop will identify emerging design themes by bringing together practitioners and researchers from across disciplines. Participants in the workshop will collaborate in a practical exercise designed to reveal issues that will increasingly impact upon the design of the products and services that will populate the urban landscape in the near future.… read more. “Call: Informing the design of the future urban landscape”

Winscape: Virtual reality windows are here

[From the Mother Nature Network’s Green Tech blog by Karl Burkart; a 2:20 minute video is here]

Winscape: Virtual reality windows are here

Who needs nature when you can have virtual reality windows that simulate any setting with the flick of an iPhone app?

Fri, Apr 30 2010

At first I thought this was a fake video, albeit a super-cool one. But in actuality it is totally real … well in the virtual sense of the word. Call it trompe l’oeil for the 21st century — Winscape can create the illusion that your living room windows look out over the Golden Gate Bridge, a coral reef or even the moon.

RationalCraft, a DIY design company founded by San Jose-based engineer Ryan Hoagland, developed the idea for Winscape more than five years ago. Now with the advent of affordable plasma TV screens and a powerful Mac Pro computer, the Winscape software is ready for prime time.… read more. “Winscape: Virtual reality windows are here”
